The Peppermint Lab: Take out a copy of both pieces of paper in your blue tub. Write your name!!!

Weathering changes rocks Can you name some things that causes weathering ? water wind hehe cold ice plants heat

Erosion Moves rocks and Sediment Can you name forces of erosion? Today we are completing an experiment that models the concepts of weathering and erosion in lab simulations. You will need to make real- world connections with two of the concepts you see today!

Let’s begin the experiment Materials: 1. One candy cane or peppermint 2. Regular pencil and a red colored pencil or crayon 3. Lab experiment paper 4. Piece of waxed paper

Time to begin! 1. Unwrap your peppermint. 2. Draw the peppermint in box 1 on your lab sheet. Use scientific illustrations! 3. Place in your mouth, you may suck on it but no biting or crunching !!! 4. The timer will tell you when to take the candy out of your mouth. Three minutes each box. C:\Documents and Settings\MSL9756\Desktop\class timer

Draw Look closely at your peppermint. Draw the changes in box 2. Size Color Shape texture http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNJe6hrdL3M&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Repeat 4 more times 123 456 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNJe6hrdL 3M&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Think How is your peppermint and a rock the same? Think about the pressure of sucking on your candy cane. Think about the saliva and what it represents. What other elements of weathering were present? How did your peppermint weather? Why?

Evaluate Fill out the back of your lab sheet. Remember to connect the peppermint with the process of weathering and erosion.

I hope you learned about weathering and enjoyed the TASTY TREAT ! Remember: Weathering is the breaking of a rocks into smaller pieces. Erosion is the movement of those pieces from one place to another! Make sure your name is on your paper. Turn in for your assessment on weathering.
