Selecting a team Selecting team members: Team membership may already be dictated by: Existing arrangements / organization / politics / election When selecting team members, it is beneficial that the manager looks into the following aspects: Specialist skills and Knowledge / Experience / Political power in organization / Access to resources / Competence

Team roles RM Belbin who is a researcher suggested that an effective team is made up of people who fill, between them, a set of 8 roles.

Multidisciplinary teams They are teams that bring together individuals with different skills and specialisms, so that their skills, experience and knowledge can be pooled or exchanged. Multi-skilled Teams: Instead of pooling skills and knowledge of different specialists, a team may simply bring together a number of individuals each of whom is functionally versatile or multi skilled and who can together perform any of the group’s task

Team Building: Team Building: involves – 1-Giving a group of people a greater sense of their identity as a team 2-Encouraging group loyalty or solidarity 3-Ecnouraging the group to commit themselves to shared work objectives Team Identity: Giving the team a name / giving the team a badge or uniform / expressing a team’s self image / Building a team Mythodology Team Solidarity Expressing Solidarity / Encouraging interpersonal relationships / controlling conflicts / controlling intra-group competition / Encouraging intra-group competition

Commitment to shared objectives The purpose of team building is to have a close knit and satisfied team, but to have a close –knit and satisfied team that fulfills its task objectives Getting a team behind its objectives involves a set of activities. lets have a look on page 239 in text book

Team Effectiveness: A contingency Approach: An effective team is one which does 2 things Achieves its tasks / maintains co-operative working through the satisfaction and interrelationships of its members Characteristics of effective &Ineffective work teams: some pointers to group efficiency are quantifiable (numerically measured) factors ; others are more qualitative factors (can be observed but not necessary measured) Tables on page 241-242

Impact of Technology Change and Technology Networks and Vital teams: Also known as geographically dispersed team. There are 7 basic types of virtual teams: Networked teams / parallel teams / project or product teams / work or product teams/ service teams / management teams / action teams.
