Overall production in 2009 - 84 million barrels per day 8 producers make up 50% of production – Saudi Arabia, USA, Russia, Iran, China, Venuzuela, Mexico and Norway Very little production in Western Europe or Asia Pacific

Seven countries account for 50% of demand – USA, Japan, China, Germany, Russia, Italy and France Demand is a result of: population and level of development Increasing demand from South East Asia, especially China as they go through rapid industrialisation.

Geopolitics: Define The study of the effects of geography (human and physical) on international politics and international relations We are focusing on the consumption of oil… can you think of any other major geopolitical issues?

Geopolitical issues OPEC dominates oil production and can keep price of oil high Land grabs of small islands so that large nations can own oil at sea – eg. China and Senkaku islands vs. Japan Conflict of many countries over unclaimed Arctic territory – for oil reserves and other resources And many more… we will look at these three.

Task Geopolitical Issues of Oil You are going to produce an annotated map of your issue which describes the geography of the conflict and the political implications The map will be at the center of your page, with the descriptions (annotations) surrounding the perimeter and labels drawn on the map It should be interesting and carefully drawn including colour You can include a legend or key but this is not necessary. HINT: work off an existing map of the conflict, add your own ideas You are TEACHING the rest of the class about your conflict – be clear!
