AIM: What are the four organic compounds essential to living things and why are they important in our body? DN: What are the building blocks of a carbohydrate? Explain the difference between a monosaccharide, disaccharide and a polysaccharide. Explain what a monomer and a polymer is. Give an example of each. HW: Quiz- Wednesday- Organic vs. inorganic, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, proteins

What is another name for Lipids? Fats

Lipids are hydrophobic What does that mean? Water Fearing Hydro phobic

What are lipids used for in our bodies? Major component of cell membranes Important energy source

What are lipids made up of? 1 Glycerol molecule and 3 Fatty Acid chains

What organic molecule does this cat have too much of? LIPIDS

What is another group of organic compounds? Nucleic Acids

DNA & RNA are Two Kinds of Nucleic Acids The building block of nucleic acids are: Nucleotides

What is a nucleotide made of?

Nucleic Acids DNA or RNA Nucleotides Phosphate Sugar Base

What is DNA responsible for? Our characteristics or traits

What is another category of organic molecules? Proteins

Proteins have many functions: Enzymes Found in cell membrane Antibodies Hormones (insulin)

What are proteins made up of? Proteins are made up of polymers of amino acids

How do we build proteins? Polymers of amino acids Each amino acid is held together by a peptide bond They come together by dehydration synthesis Dehydration Synthesis

What are Polypeptides? Polypeptides are chains of amino acids Proteins are long chains of polypeptides

How many amino acids are there? There are only 20 amino acids, but there are millions of different types of proteins. How does that happen?

Protein Shape: 1)The sequence (order) of amino acids in a protein determine its shape 2) The shape of a protein determines its function

What does Denaturation mean? An unfavorable change in temperature, pH, or some other quality of the environment can cause a protein to unravel and lose its normal shape Denatured proteins do not function properly! Remember: SHAPE DETERMINES FUNCTION!!!!

What are proteins? Polymers of amino acids Examples: enzymes hormones hemoglobin

What are the 4 Organic Molecules: Carbohydrates Lipids Nucleic Acids Proteins

What are the monomers of carbohydrates called? Monosaccharides or Simple Sugars

What are the polymers of carbohydrates called? Polysaccharides

What is the reaction called that produces polysaccharides? Dehydration Synthesis

What are the monomers of lipids? Glycerol and 3 fatty acid chains

What are the monomers of proteins? Amino acids
