3 American Government OBJECTIVE SWBT will demonstrate concepts of government through defining and correct usage of vocabulary words. DO NOW Over the past few months you hopefully have learned about community, what is government, citizenship, rights and responsibilities, and government organization in Missouri and nationally. But what does the idea of “government” mean to you? Write at least one paragraph about what you think of when you think of government. Is it some vague idea or something that could be important to you?

4 Missouri Unit Test Results How did you do? Is this how you thought you would do? How could you do better next time? It is all pieces of the puzzle. Remember these and the next unit will be easier!

5 Introduction to Foundations of Government Vocabulary In your notebook, write what you think the underlined words mean. America is a state because all 50 states are organized under one government. The federal government has more power than the state governments. Canada does not want the United States tell it what to do because it has sovereignty. Many in the United States are angry because they believe the social contract that had been in place has been destroyed. Democracy – Because the United States is a democracy, it is important that we all vote in elections.

State - A nation or territory considered as an organized political community under one government Government – The system of people, laws, and officials that define and control a state (country) Sovereignty - A country's independent authority and the right to govern itself Social Contract – An agreement between members of a community and its leaders that defines rights and duties of each Democracy - A form of government in which people choose leaders by voting
