France Loses Canada to Britain
Britain loses the United States
During the 1800s
Spain and Portugal lose Latin America

3. The Overland Empires Russia
Spreads East across Asia to the Pacific by 1700
1742 They take Alaska
1812 Fort Ross in CA
Gains lands in Central Asia, Far East Asia and Eastern Europe
The United States
Spreads West to Oregon in the Early 1800s
1803 Th. Jefferson makes “The Louisiana Purchase”
1848 Takes California, and Texas etc from Mexico

4. The Growth of The British Empire
Colonies include:
British Gradually take control of India
1840 First Opium War begins British domination of China
Australia and New Zealand colonized
1806 British Take over Cape Town from the Dutch

5. British Empire Continues to Expand
1882 Take control of Egypt
Nigeria, East Africa, Rhodesia, Sudan etc.
1902 British win the Boer War and Control South Africa
It was said that:
“The sun never sets on the British Empire!”
and it was true!

6. The French Empire North Africa
1830 The French attack Algeria, 1840 take it
1881 Seize Tunis
1901 Control most of West Africa and have “special rights” in Morocco
South East Asia
French Gain control of North Vietnam from the Chinese completing their control of Indochina

7. Other Empires In Africa
The Rest of Africa is Divided by:
Portugal: Guinea, Angola and Mozambique
Germany: Togo, Cameroon, German East and Southwest Africa
Spain: Rio de Oro, Spanish Morocco, Rio Muni
Italy: Libya, Eritrea and Somaliland
Belgium: The Congo
