Group 14: East Asia Members: Gomboluudev (Mongolia), Kwon (Korea), Nguyen (Vietnam) Land Use and Cumulus Scheme Studies Using RegCM3
2
Objective To test RegCM3 for East Asia Summer Monsoon To study sensitivity of land use change To study sensitivity of cumulus parameterization
3
Experiment Design The centered at 45.0 N and 105.0 E in Mongolia The grid size 60 km Dimension 71x101 Lambert Conformal Projection

3 Runs: 1. Control Run Grill Scheme 2. Land Use Change Semi desert to Desert (B to 8) Short grass to semi desert (2 to B) 3. Cumulus Scheme Grill to Kuo Experiment Design

Model integration Start the model at 0000UTC 25 June 1997, and integrate for 1 month simulation with 5 days spinning up. Integration time steps is 200 sec. History output is every 6 hours for RAD, ATM and 3 hours for SFR. Initial and time dependent boundary condition are obtained from ECMWF reanalysis. All other numeric and physics options are same in the 3 runs integration except of land use and cumulus parameterization.

Conclusion RegCM3 can reasonably simulate the East Asia Summer Monsoon. The desertification in central Asia may affect the local climate, surface and soil temperature, etc. It seems that Grell scheme is better suited than Kuo scheme in East Asia. Further study is needed to optimize RegCM3.
