5. Write a list of the things that Mother does in this chapter that you disagree with. Why do you think she did them? Write one reason and one possible alternative option for each action.

6. Elsa (Bruno’s Mother) Think of 4 questions you would like to ask Mother if you met her. Some Example Questions: What are your views on the effect of Out-With on your children? Are you concerned about the impact upon Gretel in particular (remember the map on Gretel’s wall)? How do you feel about the idea of returning to Berlin? What do you plan to do when you return home? How have you felt while living at Out-With? How do you feel about the transfer of Kotler? Are you completely unaware of what Bruno does in the daytime?

7. Interview You are going to conduct an imaginary television interview of Elsa and her husband. Write the script for the first five minutes of the interview. - What questions will you ask? - What will the answers be? - Will the characters be upset? Angry? Frightening? Frightened?

8. Why did Elsa do it? Why do you think Elsa took her children to a concentration camp and kept the secret from them?
