3 CYPRUS1965 - 1993 Participated as UN peacekeeping force Conflict between Turkish & Greek Cypriots

4 GULF WAR1990 Participated as UN peacekeeping force Contributed air, navy, army Dispute over oil territory between Iraq (Saddam Hussein) and United Arab Emirates

5 YUGOSLAVIA1992 Participated as UN peacekeeping force After fall of Communist USSR (1987), Yugoslavia became independent, leading to conflict between Croatian and Bosnian ethnic groups Provided peacekeeping, but ended up getting involved in conflict (fighting troops)

6 SOMALIA1992 Participated as UN peacekeeping force Contributed Canadian Airborne Regiment (CAR) Famine, civil war No ceasefire and tensions with local warlords led to hostility by local people against UN Canadian incident in which troops beat and host a Somali teenager in custody led to scandal and tarnished image for Canadian units

7 RWANDA1994 Participated as UN peacekeeping force Conflict between Tutsis and Hutus (genocide) Canadian general Romeo Dallaire led forces, but failed ultimately due to inadequate troop levels and funding from UN (UN has since apologized)

8 KOSOVO (YUGO.)1999 Participated as UN peacekeeping force Similar to conflict in 1992 with ethnic groups in civil war, but now with Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic committing genocide against other groups

9 AFGHANISTAN2003 - Participated as UN NATO force Currently has contributed significant ground forces and support equipment, training to troops
