ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES There are 4 types: 1.Primary – Activities that use natural resources eg: fishing, mining, farming… 2. Secondary – Activities that use primary resources to produce or manufacture something eg: steelmaking, lumber yards turn wood into plywood, dairies turn milk into cheese…

ECONOMIC ACTIVIES CONTINUED 3. Tertiary – Activities that provide services eg: Doctors, teachers, waiters, drivers, maids… 4. Quaternary – Activities that process and distribute information. People with specialized skills and knowledge eg: research scientists, computer programmers

ECONOMIC SYSTEMS There are 3 types of economies: 1. Traditional – People make goods for themselves, little surplus and few markets. Found in poorer (rural) countries. 2. Market – people choose what to buy and sell. Competition determines the price. Capitalism/free enterprise; private ownership. Found in rich countries 3. Command – government decides what to produce, where its made and the price. Communist countries.

ECONOMIC PATTERNS, RESOURCES, AND TECHNOLOGY Changes in the above have affected the location and patterns of economic activities. (remember the creation and sale of the pencil) eg: refrigerated trucks allow food to be shipped around the world without spoiling; countries can use e- mail to order goods from across the globe. As a result distance is no longer an issue. GLOBALISATION!
