3. Spiraling back to last nights homework, Napoleon had a problem, he needed money to finance his war against England. Without Santo Domingo, he has little use for Louisiana. Who can hypothesize what might happen next? (Turn and talk)

4. Napoleon decided it would be in his best interest to sell the Louisiana territory to earn extra money. If American decided to purchase this territory, what might it offer to settlers? (Turn and talk)

5. The new territory would provide cheap land for farmers, and give America control of the Mississippi River. After a few days of negotiation, Napoleon sold to land to the United States for 15 million dollars. Do you think this was a good purchase? Why or why not? (Turn and talk)

6. President Jefferson was worried that such a large purchase might not be legal, because the Constitution said nothing about acquiring new territory. What would you do if you were Jefferson? (Turn and talk)

7. Jefferson decided that the governments treaty making powers allowed for the purchases of new territory. The senate approved the purchase in 1803, and the Louisiana Territory doubled the size of the United States!!!

8. Guided Practice As a class, we will popcorn read a passage titled, “The Lewis and Clark Expedition”. As a class, we will answer and discuss the following: What did Jefferson hope to find out from Lewis and Clark once they had surveyed the land west of the Mississippi? How might Native Americans have seen the westward movement of settlers? Did Lewis and Clark achieve their goals? What were the lasting effects of their work?

9. Independent Practice You will be shown a video on the Lewis and Clark expedition. Please record the following: What are three facts from the video? What are two opinions you have formulated? What is one question you still have?

10. Group Work You will be given a sheet of construction paper. You will be asked to draw and visualize what you believe the land west of the Mississippi River looked like.

11. Exit Ticket Write a paragraph explaining what your visual image is depicting.

12. Homework Would you travel out west to explore uninhabited territory for your country like Lewis and Clark did? Why or why not?
