4 Components of XML System Three types of files ◦ XML data (meaning and structure) ◦ XML schemas (defines rules) ◦ XML transforms (enable the use of data)

5 Standards 1) Core Standards ◦ Expressed in XML document 2) Processing Standards ◦ Relate XML to processing 3) Key Vocabularies (Applications) ◦ languages based on XML

6 Advantages Easy to read and understand Large number of platforms Open standards XML uses human language Compatible with Java Any application can process XML

7 XML in Healthcare driven partly by legislation (HIPAA) HIPAA requires the HHS to define rules ◦ dissemination of healthcare info HL7 translates requirements HL7 produces standards for operations ◦ claims processing, imaging, and pharmacy

8 XML and Meaningful Use EPs, EHs, and CAHs submit clinical quality measures (CQMs) ◦ health outcomes, patient safety, care coordination Electronic specifications (or e-specifications) must be developed for each CQM report them from an EHR

9 XML and Meaningful Use The e-specifications include data elements, logic, and definitions for that CQM in an (HL7) standard Represents a CQM as an XML document so that it can be captured or stored in the HER ◦ data can then be sent or shared electronically
