Pre-Stage 2 Advisory 2016 Information for students in Stage 1 Dr Tasman Crowe (asdean.science@ucd.ie) Science Office (Science@ucd.ie)

Progressing to Stage 2 Attend lectures, tutorials, labs. Hand in your assignments. Talk to lecturers, science programme office etc. You must have 60 credits to complete Stage 1. It may be possible to progress to Stage 2 with TWO fails (i.e. 50 credits) BUT The Stage 2 timetable MUST be able to accommodate the Stage 1 modules that you are repeating (lectures/practicals/tutorials). Your repeating modules take precedence.

10 Science modules & 2 Electives (can be in Science) In Stage 2, students MUST Select at least 2 of the 27 subjects… Unless those subjects are all in the BBB group in which case you must select at least 3 subjects… Some Stage 2 students are covering 6 subjects Can combine some subjects across streams (e.g. Pharmacology & Medicinal Chemistry; Geology & Zoology; Geology & Env. Biology; Physics & Chemistryetc.) Stage 2 Choices

Decisions – When and How ? Decide on your Stage 2 subjects Talk to Subject Reps on the concourse & continue to get advice Register your subject choices (July) Online system will open for 1 week in July ALL subjects that you are qualified to take will be available to you and your choice is not competitive provided you choose in July. Choose your subjects (not modules !). We will assign you to subjects if you don’t make a choice, or if you don’t choose the correct minimum number of subjects. Book your start time for registration – email from Registry (July/August) Complete your Stage 2 module choices (August/September) Core modules for your subjects will be assigned automatically. Choose remaining programme cores, options (if any) and electives.

Looking further ahead… During the 2 nd semester of Stage 2 (i.e. 2017) you will list your preference of degree major. Assignment of degree majors for Stage 3 may be competitive. In current and recent academic years, over 98% of students got their first choice of degree major. In Stage 3, in order to enter Stage 4, you must obtain a GPA of at least 2.48. Your final degree classification is based 70% on your final year and 30% on your penultimate year 240 credit four year degree = 70 : 30, stage 4 : stage 3 180 credit three year degree = 70 : 30, stage 3 : stage 2
