Graduate/non-graduate job market - what you need to know: Graduate schemes: part, not all, of the graduate job market Many graduate vacancies lie within small to medium sized enterprises (SME’s) For many occupational areas, traditional graduate schemes don’t exist Non-Graduate roles are often a stepping stone Competitive market but more diverse than media representations Market information has more impact and value when its personalised – your individual research into occupations 40-50% non-degree specific: firms hire your attitude, skills and experience Minimum academic requirements vary across roles HCA subject degrees are valued by employers: we have the evidence
11
HCA: Marketing yourself effectively: Sometimes, when studying a non-vocational subject, it can be hard to see how what you learn in the course of your studies will prepare you for your post- university career. Being comfortable with this yourself, and getting it across to future employers, is vital. (Higher Education Academy, 2009) Employers are interested in your attitude and mindset that underpins your approach across academic, work and extracurricular experience.
12
Reflect on: What recruiters want? Work experience Part-time jobs, internships skills-based volunteering Extra-curricular Experiences: Interests and activities outwith study: contributions to life of university or school, active community engagement Academic ability: Academic and graduate attributes gained from undergraduate study HCA 4 th year: Your attitude and specialist blend of transferable skills and experiences Employers are interested in your attitude that underpins these 3 areas

Job Market: http://www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/careers/looking-for-work http://www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/careers/looking-for-work Advertised: Part of strategy, myth that all jobs need to be advertised. Examples include: MyCareerHub; Graduate Directories; Media/Press; Professional Bodies (websites/journals/magazines); Recruitment Agencies; Company social media; General job market websites Unadvertised: It exists, don’t ignore it – accounts for significant proportion of market. Examples include: Targeting employers – speculative applications; Networking; Informational Interviews; volunteering and work/internship experience
