Year 1 2015 - 2016

Phonics O At the end of Year 1, the children will complete a phonics screening. O This will assess their ability to recognise the 40+ phonemes used in the English language. O The screening requires the children to blend phonemes to read a combination of real words and pseudo words.

Reading O Regular reading practise will give the children the opportunity to put their phonics knowledge into action.

Reading Expectation O Shared reading in class: This takes place almost daily. O Guided reading: This takes place once a week. O Home reading: This should happen daily for between 10 and 20 minutes.

Home Reading Books O There is an opportunity to change reading books, daily. O Reading record books should be signed as an indication that a book has been read. O Comments can be added, if they are a useful method of communication.

Spellings O At the end of Year 2, the children will carry out a grammar assessment. O This assessment includes a spelling test. O The spelling test carries 50% of the total marks. O Ensure children are learning and applying spellings.

Assessment O No levels O Set objectives for the year group O Emerging, developing, secure O Collection of evidence on an on-going basis. O Secure: 85% of objectives achieved. O Aiming to be secure in Year 1 objectives by the end of the year.
