Drugs Any substance other than food which, when taken into the body, changes the way the body works All drugs affect you in a variety of ways and they should only be used to benefit your health Drug abuse Excessive use of drugs OR a dependency on drugs If used incorrectly or in excess drugs will cause harm

How can drugs be taken? Inhaling (puffer, sniffing) Swallowing (tablets, liquids) Absorption (body) Injection (needle)

Types of drugs Speed up body processes to give a burst of energy Cocaine, caffeine, cigarettes Stimulants Slows down vital body activities and calms person down Alcohol, panadol/aspirin, heroin, valium Depressants Alters perception of surroundings and causes hallucinations (visions / voices) LSD, Marijuana Hallucinogens

Drugs Legal Are able to consume Prescription: Only given by doctors Penicillin, antibiotics Non-prescription: Can use on own Cough medicine, coffee, alcohol, cigarettes Illegal Not allowed to consume or sell Cannabis, narcotics, cocaine, amphetamines, hallucinogens

Illegal drugs are harmful (That’s why the government has banned them) Immediate effects Paranoia, vomiting, anxiety, hallucinations, no concentration, no coordination, bloodshot eyes, unconsciousness, death Long term effects Cancer, diseases, psychotic behaviour, social issues, body failure, death
