Canada’s only Grassland National Park

Location Located in Saskatchewan province Just North of the border of Montana Has an east and west half

Weather and Climate Hot summers, cold winters Little Precipitation Windy

Landforms Mostly flat, prairie grassland Eastern side of the park has some rolling hills called “Badlands” Has a river valley that runs through the park

Waterways The Frenchman River flows through the west side of the park It goes east and south from a lake and goes into Montana The size of the river varies depending on how much snow has fallen in the Canadian Rockies

Vegetation Mostly a variety of grass Small Shrubs Flowers

Animals Typical Prairie animals such as Bison, Wolves, Foxes, and Prairie Dogs There are a variety of fish in the Frenchman River There are also a number of birds, especially predatory birds such as hawks

Environmental Issues Over time the grassland area has shrunk because of human activity. There are a number of endangered plants and animals living in the park. This area is so good for growing wheat that the land value is high. Endangered horn lizard.

History and Culture Nomadic Plains’ Indians were the early inhabitants Ranches and Cowboys took over because it was a perfect area to grow wheat and raise cattle. Today, the surrounding cattle ranches and wheat farms

Preservation Efforts Human activity has greatly decreased the size of the open natural grassland Since this is the only grassland park in Canada, the government is actively trying to buy more land and is trying to expand the park.
