Environmental Issues of Canada Keep it Clean!
2
Environmental Concerns One Major Issue in Canada = Acid Rain – Caused by polluted gasses in atmosphere mixing with rain 1.Created by burning fossil fuels such as coal and oil 2. Produced by factories processing minerals after mining 3. Released by vehicle exhaust in Canada and US – Wind carries poisonous emissions very far!
3
Acid Rain in Canada Creates serious problems in Ontario and Quebec Effects include: Polluted farmland and dying trees in eastern Dead plants and fish in thousands of lakes (Great lakes too) Damage to buildings Lower profits in vital industries such as fishing, forestry and agriculture
4
Pollution of Great Lakes Great Lakes important sources of transportation of goods for trade However, treated by serious pollution concerns – Acid rain – Wasted from industries – Sewage plants – Runoff containing pesticides, fertilizers, oil, grease and salt from highways
5
Solutions Great Lakes very important to both US and Canada Both countries work together to clean pollution and limit acid rain – Regulating industries – Replacing coal-fire power stations – Adding lime to lakes to neutralize acids
6
Canadian Shield Resources Minerals = valuable exports. However can mining can cause great damage to environment. Add emissions from machinery used to gather minerals. Rivers = used to produce hydroelectricity. However can effect shorelines, cause erosion, and effect food land Trees = harvested to make lumber and paper products. However can disrupt forest habitat
7
Solutions Canadian government sets plans to monitor the environment more closely, restore damaged areas, and set aside protected land in parks and reserves
