Enlistment Enlisted in the US Army Was trained as an Army Air Service Reserve pilot After training he was hired to fly the mail between St. Louis and Chicago

Orteig Prize Raymond Orteig, a NY hotel owner, offered a $25,000 prize for the first aviator to fly nonstop from NY to Paris Many pilots had died trying Lindbergh had a custom plane built
