JET ENGINE PROPULSION Chapter 0 Introduction
2
GAS TURBINE ENGINE A GAS TURBINE ENGINE OPERATES SIMILARILY TO A PISTON ENGINE. THE DIFFERENCE BEING THAT A GAS TURBINE BURNS CONTINUOUSLY, WHILE A PISTON ENGINE ONLY BURNS FOR ¼ OF THE CYCLE. THE AIR IS TAKEN IN AND COMPRESSED, FUEL ADDED AND THE MIXTURE BURNED. THE BURNED EXHAUST GAS IS GUIDED OUT THE TAILPIPE WHICH GIVES US THE REACTION TO PUSH THE ENGINE FORWARD. NEWTON’S 3 RD LAW FOR EVERY ACTION THERE IS AN EQUAL AND OPPOSITE REACTION.

History The concept of a gas turbine engine was developed by Sir Frank Whittle in 1928, but the first working engine was not produced till the 1930s. The first pure jet aircraft to fly was the Heinkel He178. The Gloster E28/39 was the first British jet to fly in 1941. The first production jet to fly was the Gloster Meteor in 1944. The Meteor was used mainly as a defence against the V1 Rockets and for ground attack.

History The Me262 came into production just after the Meteor but was used in the fighter role. Development of the jet aircraft and engine has been rapid and the latest fighters have a capability that far outweighs the wartime jets. Typhoon
