3
Learning objectives To think about how we can solve the problems linked to landfill sites To think about possible solutions to the “waste problem”
4
The waste problem Britain produces around 28 million tonnes of household waste every year! This is enough waste to fill Millmoor 46 times! This is just the stuff that we throw in our dustbins - it does not count waste from industry The total amount of waste produced in the UK each year is over 200 million tonnes! © 2007 Independent News and Media Limited
5
The waste problem Putting our waste to landfill will always generate opposition (upset some people) Taking our waste to another country, like China, to be put to landfill only shifts the problem – it does not solve it.
6
The solution The only real solution to the waste problem is to cut the amount of waste that we make! The Government have set targets for this…
7
The Governments targets By 2020 the Government wants to: reduce the amount of waste generated by 25% recycle 75% of the waste that we produce
8
Reducing waste How can we reduce the amount of waste that we send to landfill each year?
9
Waste reduction think tank You are part of a think tank – a group of people that have been put together to think about a certain topic Using your knowledge of the waste problem complete the waste think tank worksheet
10
Our ideas
11
Debrief Waste production and disposal are big problems Cutting the amount of waste we make is the only solution Using our understanding of issues is the best way to make informed decisions
