3 Truly a Global Firm The BMW Group, headquartered in Munich, Germany, manufactures under three brands: BMW, Mini, and Rolls- Royce Motorcars. –More than 106,000 employees –Production and assembly plants located on every continent –Sales offices in 39 different countries Company has common stock publicly traded on multiple stock exchanges throughout the world. –primary common shares traded on Frankfurt Stock Exchange The BMW Group has interests in other automobile companies: –Volkswagen –Audi –Porsche

BMW promotes openness and understanding of other cultures within and outside of the company through an intercultural learning initiative known as the “LIFE” project, started in 1997.

5 BMW Considers Labor Standards BMW Salaries are within the upper third in comparison with the other DAX companies Elected works councils represent the needs of employees at most plants and branches of BMW in Europe. –COP states “in negotiations with the company management, site agreements and working time models are agreed upon, the development of the company is reviewed from an employee viewpoint, and there is constant – and often critical – dialogue with the corporate management.” More info is needed here, review paper…

6 BMW’s View on Corruption Internal control system Rules and practices –everything should be seen by more than one person and the basic separation between requesting departments and Purchasing, greatly help to reduce the risk of corruption. –All units of BMW are regularly monitored by the Corporate Audit Department, according to the standards of the “Deutsches Institut für interne Revision” (German Institute for Internal Review) –The corporate audit provides departmental functions with tools for risk control and risk self-evaluation –Reviews occur more frequently for processes and areas that exhibit higher risk – for instance in countries that are more strongly affected by corruption.

7 BMW’s Commitment to the Environment 44 individual actions in environmental responsibility –BMW placed bulk of resources and efforts in this area of UN Global Compact. BMW has systematized its environmental protection efforts globally to ensure production processes maximize the efficiency of resource management to reduce emissions and solvents, avoid or recycle waste, reduce wastewater and use energy efficiently –BMW has begun to dramatically reduce the use of solvents by shipping vehicles without surface protection. 2006, 53.4% of the vehicles from BMW were delivered as such. Before BMW embarks on any development projects, construction areas must first be evaluated with the “ecological preservation of evidence” at BMW

Nearly every BMW plant has an energy research group developing energy- saving options for their respective site, lowering the energy consumed per unit produced to 2.90 MWh; 26% lower than ten years ago. BMW shares best practices across the company with expertise centers on topics: such as –water, waste, energy and emissions –includes environmental experts from the individual plants –specialists from the central environmental protection department An electronically supported waste information system (ABIS) systematically documents all waste streams in most plants as of 1997. Analyzes its systems regularly to determine whether or not the effects of production on the environment have changed over time. Requires its suppliers and service providers to comply with social standards, as well as, verifiable, systematic environmental protection and Dedicates resources to educate employees about environmental management systems and other environmental topics.
