Midpoint Formula The midpoint formula is simple. The equation is:
3
Example: If the equation is ( 4, 6 ) and ( 4, 2 ) all you do is plug the numbers into the formula The first x coordinate is 4 and the second x coordinate is also 4 The first y coordinate is 6 and the second y coordinate is 2 Then solve the problem for the x coordinates 4 +4= 8 divided by 2 is 4 Next solve the problem for the y coordinates 6 + 2 = 8 divided by 2 = 4 Now you have the answer The midpoint of ( 4, 6 ) and ( 4, 2 ) is ( 4, 4 )
4
Samples Find the midpoint of the following problems: ( 2, 4 ) and ( 6, 4 ) ( -2, -6 ) and ( 4, 8 ) ( 8, 6 ) and ( -2, 4 ) ( -2, 2 ) and ( 4, 8 ) Make sure to show your work!
5
Distance formula The distance formula is d= the square root of (x 1 -x 2 ) 2 + (y 1 - y 2 ) 2
6
Example: If the coordinates are (4, 8) and (4, 6) you just put the numbers into the formula The numbers 4 and 4 are the x coordinates and the numbers 8 and 6 are the y coordinates
7
Once you have identified the x and y coordinates enter the numbers into the formula Now find the square of the difference in x: 4-4 = 0; 0 2 is 0 Then find the square of the difference in y: 8-6= 2; 2 2 is 4 Taking the square root of 0+4 gives 2
8
Therefore, the answer to the problem is that the length is 2 2 is the distance between the coordinates ( 4, 8 ) and ( 4, 6 ) Now try some problems on your own! Be sure to show your work!
9
Samples: Find the distance between the following points: ( 4, 7 ) and ( -5, 4 ) ( 5, 8 ) and ( -8, 2) ( 6, 3 ) and ( -7, 4 ) Good Luck!
