Graphs How to set up successful graphs in science class!

Let’s create a bar graph with this format.

How to set up your graph! Y Axis (This is for your dependent variable)

How to set up your graph! X Axis (This is for your independent variable)

T – Title A – Axis I – Interval L – Labels S – Scale T.A.I.L.S. Graphing System You will have a wonderful graph if you follow the T.A.I.L.S. system. It will help you set up and label your graph properly.

TAILS T - Title Favorite Color M&Ms

TAILS T - Title A - Axis Y Axis = Dependent Variable X Axis = Independent Variable Favorite Color M&Ms

TAILS T – Title A – Axis S – Scale Decide on an appropriate scale for each axis. Choose a scale that lets you make the graph as large as possible for your paper and data. Favorite Color M&Ms

How to Determine Scale Scale is determined by your highest & lowest number. In this case your scale would be from 2 – 22. Favorite Color Number of Students Red22 Green15 Yellow11 Orange5 Brown2 Blue 22 22

TAILS T – Title A – Axis S – Scale Favorite Color M&Ms 22 2

TAILS T – Title A – Axis I – Interval S – Scale The amount of space between one number and the next or one type of data and the next on the graph is the interval. The interval is just as important as the scale. Choose an interval that lets you make the graph as large as possible for your paper and data. Favorite Color M&Ms

How to Determine Intervals The interval is decided by your scale. In this case your scale would be from 2 – 22 and you want the scale to fit the graph. A good interval would be to go by 5’s. Favorite Color Number of Students Red22 Green15 Yellow11 Orange5 Brown2 Blue 2

TAILS T – Title A – Axis I – Interval S – Scale Favorite Color M&Ms 0 5 10 15 20 25

TAILS T – Title A – Axis I – Interval L – Labels S – Scale 0 5 10 15 20 25 Yellow LABEL your bars or data points M&M Colors Give the bars a general label. What do those words mean? Number of Students Label your Y Axis. What do those numbers mean? Red Green Orange Brown Blue Favorite Color M&Ms

When to use… Bar graphsBar graphs –Used to show data that are not continuous. –Allow us to compare data like amounts or frequency or categories. –Allow us to make generalizations about the data. –Help us see differences in data.

We can also plot the data on… Line GraphsLine Graphs –For continuous data. –Useful for showing trends over time.

Here’s how that would be done. 0 5 10 15 20 25 30 RedGreen Orange Brown Blue Yellow Favorite Color Number of Students Red22 Green15 Yellow11 Orange5 Brown2 Blue 2 Red22 Green 15 Yellow11 Orange5 Brown2 Blue2 With this type of info, a line graph does not make any sense unless the colors are listed in order like they are below.
