2. BIOGRAPHY Steve McCurry was born in Philadelphia in 1950 (65 years old) He grew up in Philadelphia and attended Penn State University McCurry originally planned to study cinematography and filmmaking but ended up with a degree in theater arts. He graduated in 1974. McCurry is a world renowned photographer and had been recognized with many awards, including the Robert Capa Gold Medal, National Press Photographers Award, and four first prize awards from the World Press Photo contest.

3. GETTING STARTED McCurry originally planned to study cinematography and filmmaking but ended up with a degree in theater arts. He graduated in 1974 While attending Penn State, McCurry worked for the Daily Collegian school newspaper and began to love photography. After working for 2 years at Todays Post in Kind of Prussia, Pennsylvania, McCurry moved to India to be a freelance photographer.

4. CAREER Steve McCurry went to India with little more than a bag of clothes and his camera. He spent months exploring the country and taking pictures, and was eventually smuggled into Afghanistan as the Russian Invasion closed off the borders to western journalists. By blending in with the locals and documenting his experience, McCurry was able to bring the world the first images of the conflict and violence in Afghanistan. Additionally, McCurry has several books and his photos have been used in countless exhibits and magazines including National Geographic.

5. STYLE Steve McCurry has photographed on six continents and in countless countries. His work captures various cultures, conflicts, unique traditions and even modern societies. Despite the range of subjects and events in his work, McCurry always retains a human element. His portraits are extremely expressive and powerful.

6. AFGHAN GIRL Steve McCurry’s most famous image is Afghan Girl. It appeared on the cover of National Geographic in June of 1985.
