Background & Upbringing: Born on March 14, 1948 in Syracuse, New York (Currently 67 years young) Grew up in Massachusetts Graduated from Dartmouth College; studied art history and political science 1976: started newspaper photographing in New Mexico 1980: moved to New York and began as a freelance magazine photographer 1981: first foreign assignment with the Northern Ireland Hunger Strike, that served as a turning point in his career as a photographer

9/11: Despite James vast experiences outside of the states, he has had successful series within the states as well. A prime example would be his coverage over the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York City
