3 Declarative Declarative – makes a statement. The king is sick.

4 Imperative Imperative – gives a command. Cure the king!

5 Interrogative Interrogative – asks a question. Is the king sick?

6 Exclamatory Exclamatory – provides emphasis or expresses STRONG emotion. The king is dead! Long live the king!

8 Let’s Define Some Terms… Independent: Can stand alone as a sentence. Ex-"She is older than her brother" Dependent (subordinate Clause): needs the rest of the sentence to make sense. Ex-"Because she is older than her brother, she tells him what to do." Clause: Contains a subject and a verb What are the two main types?

9 Simple Simple – one independent clause The singer bowed to her adoring audience.

10 Compound Compound – contains two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction or by a semicolon. The singer bowed to the audience, but she sang no encores.

11 Complex Complex – an independent clause and one or more subordinate clause. Because the singer was tired, she went straight to bed after the concert.

12 Compound-Complex Compound-complex – contains two or more independent clauses and one or more subordinate clauses. The singer bowed while the audience applauded, but she sand no encores.
