Building Blocks of Geometry

DEFINITION A statement that clarifies or explains the meaning of a word or a phrase.

Point The most basic building block of geometry. It has no size. It has only location. Represent a point with a dot and name with a capital letter.

Line A straight, continuous arrangement of infinitely many points Line AB, BC, AC, AD, CD, DC, …

Line Segment Consists of two endpoints and all the points between them that are collinear with the two endpoints Line segments AB, BC, CB, CD, DC, BA, AD, …

Ray A portion of a line which starts at a point and goes off in a particular direction to infinity.

Plane Has length and width, but no thickness. It is like a surface that extends infinitely along its length and width. Plane N

Collinear On the same line Coplanar On the same plane

Equal = Having the same mathematical value Congruent Exactly equal in size and shape

Midpoint A point on the segment that is the same distance from both endpoints. The midpoint bisects the segment, or divides the segment into two congruent segments. M is the midpoint of segment AB

Dimensions

Study the diagram below. 1.Name each midpoint and the segment it bisects. 2.Name all the congruent segments. Use the congruence symbol to write your answers. C G F ED 2 cm K L J H M N P
