Step 3: Bile from the liver and pancreatic juices are added to the nutrients in the small intestine (C). The intestines squeeze and push the nutrients along (P).

During chemical digestion, complex carbohydrates like starch are broken down into simper carbohydrates like sugar, which are small enough to be absorbed into the bloodstream. Conclusion: Answer the following in your journal in complete sentences: 1. What did this action of tearing the bread into pieces represent in digestion? Label as physical or chemical. 2. Why were the drops of water added to the bag? 3. After adding the digestive juices to the bag and gently mashing the contents, what change in temperature did you observe? Change in state of matter (solid, liquid, gas)? 4. What type of energy transformation is taking place when the bread is mashed with the digestive juices? (HINT: think about the temperature change!) 5. Why is it necessary for large molecules to be broken down into smaller molecules?
