What’s New in High School Math? 2014/2015

NEW COURSES THERE ARE TWO NEW OFFERINGS FOR THE 2014-2015. 1. College Prep Math (Formally known as Developmental Math) Under Section 28.014 of the Texas Education Code, each school district is required to partner with at least one institution of higher education to develop and provide college preparatory courses in English language arts and mathematics. School districts are required to provide notice to each student who meets eligibility criteria for a college preparatory course and the student’s parent or guardian regarding the benefits of enrolling in the course. However, students are not required to enroll in college preparatory courses that are required in statute. This course does not earn math or elective credit for the Minimum or Recommended or Distinguished Plan. To earn a math credit, students must be switched to the Foundation Plan. Consult with your counselor for students who should be targeted for this course. Does not earn math college credit but it does prepare students to enter College Algebra and/or pass the TSI.

NEW COURSES THERE ARE TWO NEW OFFERINGS FOR THE 2014-2015. 2. SL Math (Strategic Learning of Mathematics) The course is designed to create strategic mathematical learners from underprepared mathematics students. The basic understandings will stimulate students to think about their approach to mathematical learning. These basic understandings will include identifying errors in the teaching and learning process, input errors, physiological concerns and key cognitive skills. Candidates for enrollment in this course are students who would have been enrolled in Algebra Block or ISP. While primarily designed for 9th and 10th graders, SL Math is open to all grade levels and students can earn.5 or 1.0 credit. Each campus may decide whether to offer SL Math for 2014-2015. For more information, see Principal Memo 6-26-2014.

NEW TEKS The Revised TEKS for high school (Algebra 1 – PreCalculus) will be implemented in the 2015/2016 school year. In preparation for the implementation of the Revised TEKS, this year curriculum writers will revise the current unit plans to align with the revised TEKS for the 2015-2016 school year.

This year, High School Math (Algebra 1 – PreCalculus) will begin the process to select new resources to align with the Revised TEKS. Information about the selection process will be sent to High School Principals in the Fall. PROCLAMATION 2015
