Energy Conservation
2
Payback Period The amount of time a consumer must use a system before beginning to benefit from the energy savings because of the higher investment cost
3
Heating & Cooling 43 % of the average home’s energy consumption is for heating & cooling rooms 3 fuels used for heating: natural gas, electricity & heating oil. More than half USA homes are heating with natural gas
4
Heating & Cooling: What you can do Maintenance – keep equipment in good working order Programmable Thermostats – regulate indoor air temperature based on day, time of day and season Insulation – most heat enters or escapes from homes through the ceilings and walls Caulking & Weatherstripping – reduces air leakages
5
Building Design You can make your home more energy efficient by considering the placement, design & construction materials Ensure maximum exposure to the sun Large, south facing windows (winter) Windows strategically placed to make use of natural light Using materials that can absorb & store heat Placing trees that provide shade
6
Lighting Compact Fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) Last longer & use much less energy than traditionally light bulbs
7
Appliances Water heater – heating water uses more energy than any other task. A tankless water heater can help save you money Refrigerator – improved insulation & seals Dryers – Dryers with automatic sensors to determine when clothes is dry Washers – Front-loading machines use 40% less water & 60% less energy They may cost more up front, but they will save you in the future!
8
Why use ? Helps consumers (That’s YOU!) know how much energy a product uses and how it compares to similar models
9
ENERGUIDE Annual Energy Consumption (kWh) Energy Consumption indicator how does it compare to the most and least efficient models in the same class?

Transportation – Fuel Economy How can you increase fuel economy? Combine errands into one trip Turn off the engine rather than idling Regularly service your vehicle Keep tires inflated What behaviours will lower your fuel economy? Quick acceleration Travelling at high speeds Carrying unnecessary weight Revving the engine

Vocabulary ENERGY CONSERVATION: Includes any behaviour that results in the use of less energy ENERGY EFFICIENCY: Involves the use of technology that requires less energy to perform the same function
