What is a Phrase? A group of words that does NOT contain a subject and verb Types of phrases: Prepositional Adjective Adverb Participle Infinitive Gerund Appositive Verbal Phrases

Adjective Phrase PPrepositional phrase that modifies a noun or pronoun TTells what kind, which one, how many, or how much Adjective: Icy chunks fell from the skyscraper. Adjective Phrase: Chunks of ice fell from the skyscraper. Examples People throughout the world have visited the Empire State Building. That painting of sunflowers by Van Gough is famous.

More Examples of Adjective Phrases Many of today’s young people voted in the presidential election The package was for my brother and me. His murals are examples of twentieth-century art.

Adverb Phrase PPrepositional phrase that modifies a verb, adjective, or adverb TTells where, when, how, to what extent, and why Examples The statue stands next to a large oak tree. Ready by dawn, the travelers set out early to reach the capital. Farmers in the Midwest harvest their crops with great care.

The Participle VVerb form used as an adjective CCan end in –ing (present) or –ed (past) SSome past participles are irregular Examples The firefighters rushed into the burning building. (present) The rusty car, abandoned by its owner, should be towed. (past) Bought at a garage sale, the painting turned out to be a masterpiece. (past)

Participle Phrase UUsed as an adjective CConsists of a participle and any modifiers or complements the participles has Examples Burning wildly, the building was about to collapse. The new song, written by Mariah Carey, is at the top of the charts. The horses galloping past the stables were enjoying the fresh air.

The Infinitive UUsed as a noun, adjective, or adverb MMost infinitives begin with “to” Examples Katherine likes to dance. (DO) Her dream is to audition for a ballet troupe. (PN) To practice my part only took thirty minutes. (Subj) The best beaches to visit are off the coast of Florida. (adj) The conductor stood to begin the performance.(adv)
