2 International Commodity Drivers & Large Scale Commercial Production Enormous timber/wood commodity markets –Generate approximately USD $220 billion annually Large scale agriculture has replaced small scale agriculture –Palm Oil –Cattle Ranching –Soy production Wood products and agricultural commodities markets are “no questions asked” for environmental or social impacts

4 International Drivers: Looking Forward SBSTA should: – explore ways all countries can account for and act to address their specific role in driving global deforestation and degradation –Encourage more government leadership and collaboration with private sectors to help guide markets toward greater supply chain sustainability –Ensure decisions tackling commercial drivers do not infringe on communities’ and indigenous peoples’ rights to manage their lands

5 International Drivers: Conclusions Any REDD+ decision must include policies that require action by ALL countries contributing to deforestation and forest degradation The UNFCCC should reinforce efforts to address drivers and promote legal trade and sustainable supply chains by including drivers language within the text of a REDD+ agreement
