1 NGfL CYMRU GCaD www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk The artist Emrys Williams uses texture in his paintings to add atmosphere to his work. How can we create texture in our paintings? Make a list of materials you might use. String Glue Tissue paper Plaster of Paris Fabric Pipe cleaners Wallpaper Sequin waste Sand Can you think of any more? Texture

2 NGfL CYMRU GCaD www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk The artist Emrys Williams skilfully moves the paint around the canvas to create texture in his work. What is texture? Texture is how a surface feels or looks like it would feel. Some words to describe texture would be: rough smooth spiky bumpy flat undulating Can you think of any more? Look for texture in your classroom? Go on a ‘Texture Hunt’ around the class. How will you record these textures? Make a texture rubbing Thick wax crayon Cartridge paper Place the paper over the textured surface and rub with the side of the wax crayon. Make a class collection of your rubbings. What patterns can you see?

3 NGfL CYMRU GCaD www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk Challenge: Find ways to create texture in your work using mixed media techniques. Glue tissue paper, string, wool, modroc onto card to create a variety of textured effects. Paint when dry. Spread interior filler thickly onto card. Make textured marks in the filler. Leave to dry. 10 NGfL CYMRU GCaD www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk Challenge: Create a ‘Texture Gallery’. Collect and record interesting textures. How can we record different textures? Make texture rubbings. Take photographs of interesting surfaces. Sketch the patterns you can see. Collect, cut and glue interesting textured materials onto your research sheet. Look at your research sheets and talk about your work. Create a texture gallery in your class.
