Orienting a Site Plan Architectural Design – preliminary design 1 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. All rights reserved.

Designing with the Sun in mind The sun is highest in the sky in the middle of June at the Summer Solstice. This is when there is the most daylight in the day, and the shadows are short. The sun is lowest in the sky in the middle of December at the Winter Solstice. This is when there is the least daylight in the day, and the shadows are longest. 3 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. All rights reserved.

Designing with the Wind in mind Where you live, which direction does the wind come from most of the time in the Summer? How about in the Winter? 4 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. All rights reserved. SPRINGTIME CROSS BREEZE?

Designing with the View in mind What this Site plan doesn’t show you is what is on each side of the property, what is behind it, and what is across the street from it. That’s something every designer has to find out! 5 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. All rights reserved.

Independent Work Time Now it’s YOUR turn to design on this lot! On your handout, you will find a sample site with specific information given. Using your new knowledge of site plan orientation based on sun angles, wind direction, and consideration of the views, design a new house and sketch it on the site. 6 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. 7 Pair and Share Show your partner your site plan sketch, and tell them why you drew it the way you did. Discuss the topics of sun angles, wind direction, and the views from the site. When you are done sharing with your partner, switch roles and let them “show and tell” with you. Ask questions! 7 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. All rights reserved.

Pop Quiz – Write your answers on the back side of your Handout. 1.When are the Summer and Winter Solstices? 2.What direction does the wind come from in the summer here?* 3.On the handout, which side of the house has the LEAST desirable views? 4.On the handout, which side of the house has the MOST desirable views? 5.What is the difference between True North and Plan North? Explain in your own words. 8 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. All rights reserved.
