1. THE CHOSEN – BOOK 1 WARM-UP Take out a sheet of paper. Write your heading with the subject: The Chosen – Tour of Chapter 1 Take out The Chosen. Answer the following question on your paper: 1.In a paragraph, summarize what you have read in chapters 1-7 in the book. Discuss with your group: Numbered Heads – Person with the most letters in their middle name will share first. As you share around your group, be prepared to be called on to share with the group.

Answer the following question on your paper: 2.Who was sent to a yeshiva? 3.What is meant by the word compulsory? 4.How would this word show up in your world? 5.Explain the comparison of the two yeshivas Danny and Reuven attended. What are the similarities? What are the differences? Discuss with your group.

3. THE CHOSEN BOOK 1 Continue reading from the last paragraph on page 9. Stop at the end of this paragraph on page 10. Act it out: This paragraph gives you a very expressive visual of Reuven’s coach. After reading the passage, choose one person in the group to act out the coach’s personality. Answer the following question on your paper: 6.Explain the word harangue. What are other words that have similar meanings? Discuss with your group.

4. THE CHOSEN BOOK 1 Turn to page 13. Begin reading at the bottom, beginning with, “I watched them come into the yard.” Finish reading to page 14, after it describes Reuven’s team. Character Perspective: One person in the group will be Danny and the other Reuven. The third person will correct any misconceptions. Role play in your group what each character would be thinking and why. What in the text made you think this way.

5. WRAP UP ACTIVITY Think about Reuven and Danny’s families, routines, community, and their personalities. Then, turn to your shoulder partner to discuss the similarities and differences in these two characters.
