7.4.1 – Intro to Trig Equations!
2
Recall from precalculus… – Expression = no equal sign – Equation = equal sign exists between two sides We can combine the ideas from algebra (inverse operations, isolating variables), with trig functions, to create trig equations
3
To solve trig identities: – 1) Use any algebra skills available – 2) Identify any trig identities we may use – 3) Use the idea of inverse trig functions to solve for specific variables
4
Caution! When using inverse trig functions, recall the ranges for said functions Sin -1 = Cos -1 = Tan -1 =
5
Example. Solve the equation 3 – 6cosx = 0
6
Periodicity But, is the last solution the only possible solution? What did periodic mean for us?
7
Example. Solve the equation 4sin 2 x + 2 = 3
8
Example. Solve the equation sin 2 x = sin 2 x + cos 2 x.
