REFINE YOUR THESIS: Qualities Thesis and “purpose” are closely related or even interchangeable. A thesis should: Be focused Provide your reader with a map of where your paper will take them Give meaning to your overall message

REFINE YOUR THESIS: Questions to ask: Why is this topic worth discussing? What is the best way to make this relevant, interesting, and engaging for my audience? What is the exact reason for considering this topic? Why am I writing this? Is there a part of this topic that is worth discussing by itself?

FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so Puerto Rico is hot, but it feels comfortable because of the constant breezes. Here the second clause (part of the sentence has a pronoun for the subject: “it.” This could stand alone as a sentence. Therefore, we use a comma. Puerto Rico is hot but feels comfortable because of the constant breezes. Here, the second part has no subject at all; therefore, we don’t use a comma. The presence of a subject in the second clause means we use a comma with the FANBOYS word. : )
