4 © UW Business School, University of Washington 2004 Transistor Transistors are made silicon – semiconductor They are the center of all computer systems Transistor can act as am amplifier, or a switch representing “on” and “off”.

Transistors, acting as switches, can perform binary mathematical calculations. A microprocessor, also known as a CPU, is a complete computation engine that is fabricated on a single chip.
