2 Henry II Was born on 4 March 1133, died in 1189. Also known as Henry of Anjou, Henry Fitzempress, Henry Curtmantle (Shortmantle) and Henry Plantagenet His mother was the Empress Matilda His father was Count of Anjou Henry II

3 As a king Lord of Scotland, Ireland, and Wales, and Count of Anjou, Brittany, Poitou, Normandy, Maine, and Gascony Claimed Aquitaine through marriage.

4 Marriage In 1152 married Eleanor of Aquitaine They had eight children During the last years of his reign Henry's wife and sons constantly plotted against him. Eleanor of Aquitaine

6 Thomas a’ Becket An educated chancellor A friend of Henry II In 1162 became the Archbishop of Canterbury As an archbishop, Becket changed his politics and opposed Henry II

7 Henry II and Thomas a’ Becket After he became Archbishop, he and Henry argued over state and religious matters. Henry lost his temper in one exchange and shouted:"Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?" He is murdered by Hugh de Morville, William de Tracy, Reginald FitzUrse and Richard le Bret. 8 Effects of Becket’s Death On Sunday 21 May 1172, Henry performed a ceremony of public penance at Avranches cathedral, where he swore: –to provide money for 200 knights to crusade in the Holy Land –to restore all property to the church of Canterbury –not to obstruct any appeals to Rome by the clergy –to abolish all customs prejudicial to the Church.
