Effects of Becket’s Death On Sunday 21 May 1172, Henry performed a ceremony of public penance at Avranches cathedral, where he swore: –to provide money for 200 knights to crusade in the Holy Land –to restore all property to the church of Canterbury –not to obstruct any appeals to Rome by the clergy –to abolish all customs prejudicial to the Church.
