Hodgkin’s Disease Cancer of the lymphatic system (Chemotherapy/Radiation) S&S = Painless swelling of lymph nodes in your neck, armpits or groin Persistent fatigue Fever and chills Night sweats Unexplained weight loss Loss of appetite Risk factors – Age 15-30 Family Hx Male Weakened immune system

HIV Human Immunodeficiency Virus Progressively destroys T4-Lymphcytes Transmission – Sexual contact, sharing hypodermic needles, birth, blood transfusion (rare) No evidence HIV is spread through tears, urine, sweat, feces Is not spread through handshaking, coughing, sneezing, sharing utensils

HIV Symptoms Early Flulike symptoms (fever, fatigue, enlarged lymph glands) Will disappear in a week to a month Progressive (5 to 10 years later) Numerous infections Enlarged lymph glands (+ 3 months.) Lack of energy Frequent fevers/sweats Wt. loss Persistent yeast infections / Persistent skin rashes Pelvic inflammatory disease Short term memory loss

Treatment No cure AZT – block viral replication Protease inhibitors – weakens the function of the virus
