MATHEMATICS Algebraic Manipulation – Collecting like terms
2
Aims of the Lesson To review algebraic terminology. To look at how we can simplify expressions by collecting like terms together.
3
Collecting Like Terms Collecting ‘like’ terms means grouping together… the same letters OR… the same sets of letters OR… the same powered letters when they are being added or subtracted Simply do this by adding or subtracting the numbers in front of them (remember no number = 1!)
4
Examples 1 Simplify each of the following by collecting like terms together: 3a + 7a – a OR you could think as follows: I have 3 a’s and add another 7 a’s to them (giving me 10 a’s) before taking one away which leaves 9a altogether. 17p – 6b + 4p OR you could think as follows: I have 17 p’s and negative 6 b’s to which I add another 4 p’s so in summary I have 21p – 6b. (3 + 7 – 1)a 9a (17 + 4)p – 6b 21p – 6b
5
Examples 2 Simplify each of the following by collecting like terms together: 12ab + 6bc – 5cd (NB. ab’s are NOT the same as bc’s or cd’s) 4xy + 6x² – 5y + 12xy – 7x² (NB. it is the symbol on the LEFT of a term that tells you whether to add or subtract it from what went before) (can not be simplified!) 16xy – x²– 5y
6
Practice Simplify each of the following (by collecting ‘like’ terms) 1)t + t + t + t + t + t = 2)5d + 7d – 3d = 3)7ef – 8ef + ef = 4)12ab – 3pq + 5ab – 6ab = 5)5p² + 7p + 2p² - 4p = Click on to the next slide when you are ready to check your answers.

Answers 1)t + t + t + t + t + t = 2)5d + 7d – 3d = 3)7ef – 8ef + ef = 4)12ab – 3pq + 5ab – 6ab = 5)5p² + 7p + 2p² - 4p = 6t 9d 0 11ab – 3pq 7p² + 3p

What next? Make appropriate notes (including examples) on collecting like terms or printout the prepared notes and complete all the tasks within them. Work through the MyMaths lesson (and then its online homework) called: Algebra > Algebraic Manipulation > Simplifying 1 Save and complete the worksheet: Collect-S1.xlsx
