2 UNFPA/UNECE/NIDI Training programme on international migration, Geneva, 24-28/01/2005 Classifications: different categories of migrants According to reason for admission –work –study/education –reunification with family member –asylum and refuge According to individual migrant’s reason(s) for moving Illegal/irregular/undocumented migrants

Ambiguity: Admitted for specific work reasons Or: anyone who is of working age who moves and subsequently (at some time) enters the labour market Additional criteria: skill levels –classify based on diploma’s? –or based on actual work/occupation?

4 UNFPA/UNECE/NIDI Training programme on international migration, Geneva, 24-28/01/2005 What is a labour migrant? Change of category: dependant -> worker student -> spouse -> worker worker -> spouse In most countries: citizenship, country of birth, plus age criterion

5 UNFPA/UNECE/NIDI Training programme on international migration, Geneva, 24-28/01/2005 Categories of labour migrants Short-term foreign workers (< 1 year) –seasonal agricultural workers –seasonal hotel work –construction workers –labour tourists –highly skilled ‘consultants’ –entertainers –visiting scholars

6 UNFPA/UNECE/NIDI Training programme on international migration, Geneva, 24-28/01/2005 Long-term (> 1 year, but not permanent) –skilled workers –soccer players –overseas students –some asylum seekers –etc.

7 UNFPA/UNECE/NIDI Training programme on international migration, Geneva, 24-28/01/2005 Permanent immigrants –foreign born workers with the right of permanent settlement –foreign born children entering the labour market –overseas students –etc.
