3. Speech Bubble I am a Speech Bubble, and I indicate when a character is talking. My “pointer” or “tail” indicates who is doing the speaking.

4. Thought Bubble I am a Thought Bubble. I express a character’s unvoiced thoughts. My tail is usually made of bubbles.

5. Panels & Gutters In comics and graphic novels, pages are broken up into smaller units known as panels. The white spaces that run between panels are called gutters. They help the reader easily distinguish between separate panels.

6. Foreground & Background The foreground is the part of the picture closest to the viewer. The background is, just as the name implies, the images that are in the back of the picture.

7. Motion Lines Motion lines show movement in a panel. The more motion lines present, the more intense the action is. Notice how the guy chasing a butterfly has far fewer lines than the superhero in flight!

8. Figures A figure is just another word for the characters (people or otherwise) depicted on a page. How many figures are on this page?
