Martin Luther Martin Luther was a German monk who attacked the catholic church. He did so utilizing his ninety-five theses. He believed that the catholic church had become to secular, and believed reform was necessary. Though he was prosecuted for his views, he never took back his statements.

Henry VIII King Henry the VIII was a king who wished to divorce his wife. The catholic church would not annul it, or declare it invalid, so he created his own church that was the Church of England, and declared himself head of this church. In other words, he established something of a theocracy.

Ignatius of Loyola Ignatius of Loyola was a catholic loyalist key in the counter-reformation and a former soldier. He created the catholic order of the Jesuits. The Jesuits were very disciplined, and were firm believers in the power of education.

John Calvin John Calvin was a protestant reformer who created Calvinism. He war a believer in predestination, and wanted to create a world ideal for those predestined to go to heaven.

Pope Paul III Pope Paul III was a catholic Pope who saw a need to clarify the beliefs of the catholic church. To this purpose he convened the council of Trent, which clarified the beliefs of the church and abolished the sale of indulgences.

Mary Ward Mary believed that women deserved an education, and to that extent set up many schools for girls in Europe.

Queen Elizabeth I Elizabeth was a strong protestant queen of England. She drafted the Act of Supremacy, which re-split England from the catholic church.

Bloody Mary Bloody Mary was a catholic who is famous for hunting and killing protestants. She was Queen just before Elizabeth I, and returned England back to the Catholic church, after Henry VIII broke away.

Ulrich Zwingli Zwingli was another reformist who wished to set up a theocracy. Throughout Switzerland he gained followers, but it was a relatively isolated movement. He was opposed by Martin Luther, which also hampered the growth of his following.

Baldassare Castiglione The Italian humanist and diplomat wrote a book called “The Courtier” which describes the perfect renaissance gentlemen and gentlewomen.

Michel Angelo He was known as the son of Florence and was the most famous and important artist of the renaissance.

Johannes Gutenberg In 1400s he invented the first moveable printing press which help the renaissance to grow.

William Shakespeare William Shakespeare was the greatest play writer in the renaissance and today. He speeded the ideas of the renaissance to the mass.
