R OOT C AUSE A NALYSIS Eliminates unfounded opinion, prejudice, and organizational myth Reduces false starts, patching of symptoms, and waste of scarce resources Converts data to information, knowledge, understanding, and wisdom Improves data-based decision making (Preuss, 2003) Root Cause: The deepest underlying cause, or causes, of positive or negative symptoms within any process that, if dissolved, would result in elimination, or substantial reduction of the symptom.
