Today you will need your brainpop sheet, piece of paper, writing utensil, and compassion packet 2-12-16

5 minutes to write on… (Yes, you have done one similar)  READ the following quote. "The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who cannot read them.“ ~ Mark Twain  THINK carefully about the following statement. Reading is the most important skill a person can learn. People who are able to read well are much more likely to be successful than people who can not.  WRITE an essay explaining why reading is such an important skill to develop.

Today we will….  Grade our graphic organizer and brain pop work  Construct our introductory paragraph.  Utilize a hook and thesis statement

Brainpop  5 points each x.

Hooks  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfYC_ CBNtiM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfYC_ CBNtiM  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1G371J iLJ7A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1G371J iLJ7A

Purpose of a hook?  Be an INTERESTING preview of your essay  Grab the reader’s attention.  Introduce the reader to your work with a positive attitude  Display your personality!  Get a higher score

Dialogue  Start off with your characters talking and pull your reader into the conversation.  Ex. “One person asking me how I was doing prevented my suicide,” Sue confessed to the support group.

Snapshot Paint an immediate picture or setting that your reader can step into. Use lots of detail. The terrifying scent of illness and crowded bodies drifted from the makeshift refugee camp.

Action  Begin with action and readers will want to know what happens next.  Aiming for the basket, sweat dripping down his face, Bill released the ball, watching its downward arc.

Quotation Uses a quote to lead to the thesis statement or begin with the truism that you will tie back into in your conclusion. As Selena Gomez sings, “We don't have to fall from grace, put down the weapons you fight with, and kill 'em with kindness.”

Surprising fact  Surprising fact Surprise your reader and get them to read more to find out where you are going with that weird idea you introduced.  When we’re kind we inspire others to be kind and studies show that it actually creates a ripple effect that spreads outwards to our friends’ friends’ friends – to 3- degrees of separation (Dr. David Hamilton).

Humor  Make the reader smile with an appropriate pun or amusing observation and the reader is likely to want to read more.  “Like a clown volunteering at a hospital, I think compassion is a nice jester.”

Definition  In your own words or using an actual definition for a term or idea, introduce your topic.  While Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines compassion as “sympathetic feeling,” the reality this feeling is so much more.

Anecdote  Start off with a short and relevant reflection or story that relates to your topic. These are best when personal and kept brief.  “Creeping into the cafeteria on my first day, I felt nauseous, shaking, and sure my life was over. Then I heard an angel whisper, “Are you new? Here, come sit with me.”

Thesis statement  Roadmap for your entire essay  Basic template  Dependent clause, viewpoint+ reason 1 + reason 2  Dependent clause+topic+Box 1+Box 2  As someone who has experienced a life filled with support, I define compassion as both empathy and kindness.

Do you need….  Something to connect the hook and the thesis?  It will depend on the length and specificity of your hook.  If you are less than 3 lines, then add a transition sentence between the two.

Today’s assignment  Complete the worksheet.  Construct your OWN introduction.  We will be adding to this so make sure it is clean, correct, and easy to find!

To do  1. Hook x5 (use sheet!)  2. Thesis using formula on sheet  3. Pick BEST hook you wrote  4. Transition sentence is less than 3 sentences total.  5. Introduction –HOOK+TRANSITION (if needed)+ THESIS

Empathy: understanding and entering into another's feelings What thoughts and feelings do these men have and why?

Empathy: understanding and entering into another's feelings What made one human do this to another?
