4 Haymarket Riot – May 3, 1866  Riot breaks out between strikebreakers (replacement workers) and anarchists (against organized labor).  Thousands of riots would follow in U.S.  *Government frequently opposed labor union activities.*

5 American Federation of Labor  *Founded by Samuel Gompers, 1866*  First opened to skilled workers only  Workers joined through a trade union

6 American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO)  Largest Union in U.S.  Represents more than 11 million workers  Established in 1955 when AFL merged with CIO.
