Everyone should be able to see the “12” embedded among the colored dots. This first test is used to explain the procedure of the test to a subject.

Normal subjects should see “8” while persons with red-green color blindness will see “3”.

There are two major forms of red/green color blindness. Normal or slightly color blind persons can see a “35” in this illustration. Persons strongly affected by protan color blindness will see only a “5”, while those with strong deuteran color blindness will see only the “3”.

Normal: trace both lines Protan color blind: trace only the purple line Deuteran color blind: trace only the red line. Persons of each group who are only mildly affected may trace both lines, but only with difficulty.
