SKITTLES PROJECT – PROPORTIONS, PERCENTS AND MORE…. James J. Jordan

INSTRUCTIONS Break into groups (Preferably, 2 – 4 people per group)

PART 1 – HOW MANY SKITTLES? You have been given a number of skittles Count how many skittles of each color you have (e.g., 8 red, 7 green, etc.) Write the numbers of each color’s total in the spaces provided.

PART 1 - CONTINUED Have one student in the group count all of the skittles. Have another student add the number of skittles for each color together. Are the two counts equal? Write the total number of skittles in the space provided.

PART 1 - CONCLUSION Show the skittles’ colors as a ratio to the total number of skittles. For example, if there are 40 skittles total… And out of the 40, 15 are red, then our ratio is 15 red ----------------- 40 skittles  Write the ratios in the spaces provided for each color of skittles.

PART 2 - PERCENTAGES Using our example from the previous page… Note, that 15/40 is just a division problem. 15 red ----------------- 40 skittles  Calculate the percentage of red skittles by completing the division problem. 15/40 = 0.375 = 37.5%  Calculate the percentage of each color and write in the spaces provided.

PART 3 – EAT THE SKITTLES Calculate how many skittles each member of your group should receive. For example, 4 members in the group and 40 skittles = 40 skittles --------------------- 4 members = 10 skittles per member.  Split the skittles up and enjoy.
